We Are Augustines release Book Of James/Philadelphia double-A side on 3rd September.
The double-A side features Book of James and Philadelphia (The City of Brotherly Love) ahead of their performances at Reading and Leeds festival this Summer ahead of their Autumn tour.
The new release leads with the band’s flagship tune Book of James – a moving eulogy inspired by first-hand experience and the band’s attempt to humanize the homeless and mentally ill.
Live favourite Philadelphia (The City of Brotherly Love) is the band’s snap-shot of a city landscape capturing a real place with real people living real lives.
Eric Sanderson, bass player recalls: “Philadelphia was one of the first songs we recorded for Rise Ye Sunken Ships. It completely morphed in the studio. We went through about as many drum beats you could think of before we settled on the Motown beat. It was recorded live with only a few overdubs, something we were pushing for at the time.”
It changed again when the band played it out live, Eric said: “When we started playing live we desired something more from the song and worked out a version with just piano and vocals. That change took it from the the loudest song on the record to the most intimate song in the set. Through this transformation we now have two versions of the song to choose from every night. Sometimes we don’t even know which one we will play until the moment comes in the set. Having both versions really helps us to stay connected with the audience by morphing the show and keeping it in the present.”
