We caught up with Tennessee songbird Lauren Pritchard and her charming Southern drawl ahead of the release of her debut album Wasted in Jackson, out on Oct, 25.
Purple Revolver: Your debut album Wasted in Jackson is coming out soon, what can we expect from the project?
Lauren: I think it is just a really soulful, honest record. Me and Eg (Eg White this is, who has penned hits for Adele and Duffy) have been working hard in the studio to get it right and I wanted it to capture what has happened during the last few years of my life, good and bad.
Purple Revolver: So you write all your own material, in terms of your writing process how do you create your songs?
Lauren: Well usually a melody just comes to me and I work with it. The songs are rooted in things that happen in everyday life. A lot of the material is pulled from things that have happened to me or I have seen other people going through. I am capable of taking a more detached approach, I just think there is more emotion in the songs that come from personal experiences.
Purple Revolver: We have seen your video for ‘Not the Drinking‘, and you have got some serious moves by the looks of it. Do you come from a dancing background or is it something you had to work on?
Lauren: I do come from a dancing background, I studied classical ballet for years and still take classes when I can today. I had my first one when I was four years old, so I have had a long time to practice. I also performed for in shows on Broadway for a time, so dancing has always been a big part of my life.
Purple Revolver: I understand you are from Tennessee, which is also now the home of Jack White and his wife Karen Elson. Are you a fan of their music?
Lauren: I am a big fan. I love the stuff Jack has done with The White Stripes and The Dead Weather and Karen is so talented. I think it is good they have moved back home.
Purple Revolver: Have you ever been out to Jack’s Third Man Recording studio in Nashville? Ever recorded there?
Lauren: I have been away from home for so long myself living in New York and now here, I only really get home for Christmas so I have not had the chance to visit yet, but one day who knows, I would love to record there.
Purple Revolver: You have recently worked with Professor Green. How did that collaboration come about?
Lauren: Well we are mates outside of music, so we kind of just said one day, “Want to record something together?” and it went from there. He has always got something to say and speaks his mind, which I admire.
Purple Revolver: We are running a Bill Murray week on the website, what is your favourite film by that lovable rogue?
Lauren: Well, I can have a good look on imdb now to give you a really well thought answer. But it should be known I absolutely love Bill Murray, when I was a kid I had two films that I had to watch all the time and they were Ghostbusters and the first Batman. But there are so many good ones, Caddyshack is great, The Royal Tenenbaums is hilarious, Groundhog Day. Just reading here that Ghostbusters 3 is coming out, well that changes everything! Ask me at the end so I can have a good think.
Purple Revolver: So you head out on tour soon with a number of you label mates like Tinashe, Pete Lawrie and Pearl and the Puppets. You looking forward to getting out there?
Lauren: We leave tomorrow so it is all happening. I have known a lot of the artists on tour for a long time, and it is great to be around so many creative people. We all just feed off each others energy. It is nice live and work in such a healthy environment, with no egos, where everyone is just happy for you if you have any success. I think that is rare today, especially in such a competitive industry.
Purple Revolver: Finally, the best Bill Murray film? If we had to push you for an answer.
Lauren: It would have to be Groundhog Day.
