Regularly described as one of the most influential albums of all time, September marks the 20th anniversary of Nevermind’s release.
The album elevated Nirvana: Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and future Foo Fighters mainman Dave Grohl from members of a critically acclaimed cult band from Aberdeen, Washington State to spokesmen of a generation.
The band’s second album and major label debut was an instant success, putting grunge on the musical map and ushering in Generation X.
Having sold almost eight million copies before the year was out, the album’s current worldwide sales stand at over 30 million.
Inspiring millions of fans and musicians across the globe over the past two decades, the album will undoubtedly continue to do so for future generations.
The 20th anniversary reissue of the album, is to be released on September 26th, 20 years to the day since its original release.
The re-issue is presented in a full spectrum of different formats taking the listener closer than ever before to Nirvana’s masterpiece. See below for full details and tracklisting.
The album is presented in a range of different editions, ranging from a 4 CD/1 DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital CD remaster of the original album.
The strictly limited edition, numbered Super Deluxe Edition represents one of the most ambitious and expansive collections of its kind.
With only 10,000 copies available in North America and another 30,000 for the rest of the world, the collection is set to become one of the most sought after releases of the band’s output.
The release features the originally remastered album plus accompanying studio and live B-sides that appeared on the LPs singles.
The set also features the original demos the band recorded at producer Butch Vig’s Smart Studios prior to recording the album in Los Angeles.
In addition to this are the original rehearsals, recorded on ghetto blasters by band that the group initially sent to Vig, as rough sketches of the songs.
These recordings allow the listener to hear the creative process first-hand, as early versions of Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are and On a Plain take shape.
The 20th anniversary reissue presents dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live sessions.
A full-length, previously unreleased 1991 Halloween Concert filmed at the Paramount Theatre in the band’s hometown of Seattle is included.
The only one of the band’s gigs to be shot on film, the original 16mm footage has been upgraded to stunning 1080p high definition quality with 5.1 uncompressed surround sound.
In addition to this are the four music videos that accompanied Nervermind’s epochal singles.
A 90 page bound book will also accompany the package, featuring rare and never seen before photos, documents and other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era.
Two previously unreleased BBC radio sessions will be included in the package.
Exclusive to the Super Deluxe Edition are the original mixes of the album by producer Butch Vig, the Devonshire Mixes.
These offer the listener an alternative perspective on the album, compared to the commercially available mixes helmed by Andy Wallace.
The Nevermind 20th anniversary reissue will also be available as a 2 CD Deluxe Edition featuring the remastered album and B-sides, the Smart Studio Sessions, the ghetto blaster rehearsals and BBC sessions.
The package will also be available on vinyl as a 4-LP 180 gram heavyweight edition, featuring the same 40 tracks as the Deluxe Edition, a remastered CD of the original album plus digital versions of the standard and deluxe editions.
