Delta Maid is quickly finding a niche in the musical landscape, reconstituting the good ol’ country music twang for a new era, a new attitude, with it’s soul still firmly rooted in the deep South.
Now country is not the most revolutionary or nuanced of genres, it is what it is, traditional, full of soul and narrative; and Delta Maid is a proud practitioner.
The sultry 25 year old, a self taught guitarist from Liverpool, developed this acquired taste in music as child when she became obsessed with the American roots recordings her parents would have ringing through the house.
She is a delightfully unique singer songwriter who’s languid melodies have the power to transport you far and beyond the Mississippi Delta.
Following support slots with Ray LaMontagne, Martha Wainwright, Ellie Goulding and currently supporting Seth Lakeman on his 17 date UKtour, Delta is readying her debut album, Outside Looking In, which is set for release on May 8th 2011.
Packing a hipflask full of Patsy Cline, Bessie Smith and soul-studded country blues, this Liverpudlian singer songwriter has harnessed a sound that is all her own, heart-felt and authentic.
After this summer’s sumptuous release Broken Branches, a track which was part recorded at Liam Watson’s legendary analogue Toe Rag Studios, Delta has been recording and co-producing her first ever album in her hometown.
Drawing parallels between the down home lyrics of delta blues and her own upbringing this side of the Mersey, Delta’s life isn’t as far removed from the Mississippi-based music that has inspired her.
Even though she’s never been to the Deep South, Delta has sonically hitchhiked her way cross-country, from Laurel Canyon down to Louisiana and through the capital cities of country and blues – Nashville and Memphis – marrying the grooves in her exhaustive record collection.
Lead single Of My Own, released May the 1st, is a country fried hip shaker which sits in glorious contrast to the sultry, laidback swing of Running On Empty.
