Sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow, collectively known as 2:54, are gearing up to release their debut album and cement themselves as one of 2012’s most important breakthrough UK bands.
But before their lo-fi home demos hit the web and created a storm of critical acclaim, Colette made a short lived fanzine called Taxidermy.
She says: ‘It was about music and women. You know riot grrrl, that kind of thing. I made three ‘issues’ if you could call them that.
‘I was into Kathleen Hanna, Joan Jett, Patti Smith. Bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and Huggy Bear were exciting and liberating.’
Despite the zine the sister’s influences are not purely feminine based. The duo draw influences from rock, punk and R’n’B, including the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Bad Brains and Kyuss.
The self-titled album will progress their own blend of haunting, freaked grooves and cloud-bursting melodies that fans of their 2011 Scarlet EP have come to expect.
Recorded with PJ Harvey producer Rob Ellis and mixed by by the legendary Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails), it features a reworking of their fan favorite Creeping.
The Bristolians have picked up some fans in the music industry too, touring with Yuck, Wild Beasts and The Macabees and recently saw their buzz reach across the pond, signing to US label Fat Possum.
2:54 will hit the road in April ahead of the album release on May 28th.
