The 63rd Cannes Film Festival kicks off tomorrow and promises to live up to its reputation for being an explosion of the best of the latest politics, business and art.
The Brits are leading the way this year and Film Four productions will have two films competing.
Another Year, Mike Leigh’s tale of a middle-aged couple enduring other people’s problems is leading the way with a star-studded cast of Leigh regulars including Jim Broadbent, Lesley Manville and Imelda Staunton.
Meanwhile new leading lad, Aaron Johnson tells the contemporary tale of disenchanted youth in Nakata’s Chatroom which will be in competition for the Palme d’Or and Prize Un Certain Regard.
Meanwhile Ridley Scott’s, Robin Hood will be opening the festival with some straight shooting action and Oliver Stone’s Wall Street sequel, Money Never Sleeps will close.
Another film in the running for an award is Doug Liman’s spy thriller Fair Game, starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn.
Films that will be looking for commerce at this year’s festival include; Inferno, Lindsey Lohan’s biopic of 70’s porn star Linda Lovelace.
Alex Garland’s (28 Days Later, The Beach) reworking of Judge Dredd rebooted in 3D has just been announced to be making the rounds with its director Peter Travis.
Liam Gallagher will be sharing details of his first delve into film producing Beatles biopic of their final years based on Richard DiLello’s long and windeing-titled book, The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider’s Diary of the Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire and Its Wild Rise and Fall.
Catchy, lets hope Gallagher doesn’t keep that title.
Woody Allen will also be talking about his next project Midnight in Paris and unveiling his latest work Tall Dark Stranger.
Head of the Jury this year went to Director Tim Burton. The choice of Burton has been described as “unanimously greeted with enthusiasm” as he transcends both the art house and popular cinema.
