A tribute performance celebrating the life of award winning actress and writer Carrie Fisher will take place at VideOdyssey tomorrow night.

Talented spoken word artist Keziah Hodgson, who performed as part of The Last Word festival at The Camden Roundhouse earlier this year, has prepared a performance inspired by Carrie’s most notable literary works.

Carrie, who sadly passed away in December 2016, is best remembered for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars films, especially after reprising the iconic role with such aplomb in the recent Disney produced stories from the Jedi Universe.

But the brunette beauty was also fondly followed by her fans for the film When Harry Met Sally alongside several semi-autobiographical novels, a one-woman play and its non-fiction book, Wishful Drinking and was a script doctor for a number of films such as Sister Act and The Wedding Singer.

Keziah said: “I think Carrie is a hero to many people for different reasons, but it’s her literary work which deserves more attention.

“I want to highlight and honour her writing, because she was an incredible force with the written word and I feel Carrie isn’t given enough recognition for that.”

Guests will be treated to an original performance mainly inspired by Carrie’s book The Princess Diarist and will be able to enjoy free retro arcade games at the venue as well as a bar serving an assortment of Carrie Fisher cocktails and drinks.

Describing the performance, Keziah said: “I’ll be reading selections from all of Carrie’s books and weaving it in with my own writing thematically.

“It’ll be quite a tender performance drawing particular attention to her articulation of love and relationships, which I think she did so well.”

Both Keziah and VideOdyssey owner Andy Johnson describe themselves as ‘huge fans’ of Carrie’s work, which formed their inspiration for hosting the tribute show.

Andy said: “Keziah was the first performer to take the stage when we re-opened the studio at Toxteth TV as an arts space, so when I found out that Carrie Fisher was one of her all time heroes, I knew we had to display Keziah’s prowess with the spoken word to pay homage to one of Hollywood’s all time greats.

“Carrie had a strident command of the English language, as fans of her written work will attest and with Keziah also doing readings from The Princess Diarist, this feels like it will be a perfect candle lifted to one of the bright shiny stars, we see above us in the sky.”

Keziah added: “Myself and Andy had been chatting about collaborating on an event for a while and had been throwing a few ideas back and forth and as soon as he suggested doing a Carrie Fisher event, I knew we could do a really cool thing.

“We’re both really excited about it.”

The night will be varied with a mix of low-key performances from Keziah, special film screenings and a quiz with prizes.
