It has been nine years since Detective Sherlock Holmes was last seen on the big screen, but now we finally have confirmation that the long-awaited Sherlock Holmes 3 is officially happening.
Warner Bros. have announced the follow up to Guy Richie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) will debut worldwide in theatres on the 25th December 2020.
Avengers: Infinity War’s Robert Downey Jr. and Fantastic Beasts star Jude Law are expected to return to their roles as Holmes and John Watson, in a script penned by Hannibal’s Chris Brancato.
It is unclear whether director Guy Richie will be returning for this instalment or whether Warner Bros. may want to take the series in a new direction.
We will also have to wait to hear if composer Hans Zimmer will be returning to create another magnificent score, as he did with both of the previous instalments, which are still some of his best work.
With the movie opening in December 2020, it will be in direct competition with the animated Sing 2, and untitled live-action Disney movie and James Cameron’s Avatar 2.
If the year 2020 seems too far away for the next trip to Baker Street, the upcoming Holmes and Watson, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, will be released on 21st December 2018.
We can only hope that Sherlock 3 will be just as good, if not better, than the previous two movies. For fans of the Detective, there’s a lot to be excited about and a lot to uncover.
Sherlock Holmes 3 will be released on 25th December 2020.
