Actress Rachel Bilson has hit out at director Sofia Coppola for glamorizing the crimes of teen thieves in The Bling Ring, her new film of the same name.
The star of the O.C. was a victim of the robberies on which the film is based, which took place between 2008 and 2009, and involved a group of teenagers stealing from the homes of celebrities.
A re-enactment of the raid that took place in Bilson’s LA house appears in the film.
The Jumper actress said: “I thought it was weird to glorify something that was so upsetting for a lot of people. It’s important to detach from material things, but the special, personal things I lost are hard to forget.”
Bilson’s OC co-star, Mischa Barton, is also referenced in the film – with a mention of her 2007 drink driving arrest. She too has hit back at the director on Twitter.
Bilson Tweeted: “The whole idea of this movie, granted, I haven’t seen it, creeps me out #theblingring. #undeserved,” she tweeted last week. “Really #sofiacoppola #theblingring my name? Shame on you.”
