Quentin Tarantino is slowly beginning to put together the pieces for his latest project, and is rumoured to be in discussions with A-list actors for what is expected to be a rather unique movie based around the Manson Family murders.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project, which is yet to be titled, was written by Tarantino, and would also be directed by him. Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who have produced and worked on the previous Tarantino films are both set be involved.

It’s said that WME are in early stages of shopping the project to studios to co-finance and co-distribute the movie. This move is different to the way Tarantino and the Weinsteins made 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, which had Universal Studios as a financial and distribution partner.

Sources claim that Tarantino is essentially finishing the script and that Brad Pitt, who starred in Basterds, and Jennifer Lawrence have been approached regarding roles. Studios could receive the deal after Labor Day, according to one source. The plan is for the movie to begin shooting in 2018, potentially in the summer.

Script details are scarce but one of the stories would most likely centre on Sharon Tate, the actress, wife of Roman Polanski, who was murdered by Manson and his followers in the summer of 1969.

Manson had ordered several of his Family members to attack anyone living in a house located on Cielo Drive in the Benedict Canyon part of Los Angeles, believing that it was owned by Terry Melcher, son of Doris Day, a record producer who had earlier rejected him for a record deal.

Over the course of several hours in the early hours of August 8th, 1969, the four followers, using guns and knives, horrifically killed Tate, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, along with four other occupants.

In 1971, Manson and certain members of his crew were sentenced to life imprisonment for these and several other murders committed that summer.

If this Manson project comes to life as Tarantino’s next movie, it’ll be a unique project as it’ll be his first movie to be based on true events. Tarantino has cemented his career by taking his favourite genres such as crime and Westerns and rising them to A-list status while also managing to pay homage to them.

He’s also proven his ability to create strong and memorable female roles, from the title character in Jackie Brown, to the Bride in Kill Bill to the female characters depicted in Death Proof.

Tate could be the latest to join that list.

Any actor involvement is on the early side, and one insider said that Lawrence is not considering the Tate role.
