Oscar nominees for the 92nd awards ceremony were revealed last week, with fans already anticipating this year’s winners.
Although there were some criticisms surrounding no females being nominated for best director, most notably Greta Gerwig with her interpretation of Little Women, and the lack of diversity in other categories.
This follows Black Panther making history last year as the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture, fllowing ‘Whitewash’ claims for lack of black nominees in recent years.
Despite this, many are still eager to see how the show pans out this year. With some hopes falling on the bittersweet Nazi Germany movie Jojo Rabbit, which features director Taika Waititi – who is of Polynesian and Jewish descent, playing Adolf Hitler as a 10-year-old’s imaginary friend, which is up for 6 awards.
Joker is in the running for 11 awards, including best director and Joaquin Phoenix nominated for best actor. The film grossed in at over £1 billion worldwide has already secured numerous awards. It is a fan favourite for best picture, but what else is it up against?
Another favourite to win best picture is 1917. With 10 nominations for the Academy Awards, some predict that its success in the box office could lead to a rewarding awards season for director, Sam Mendes; after his film took the top award at the SAGs last weekend.
Korean blockbuster, Parasite is also in the running for six awards, including best picture. The film is one of very few international movies to be included in the best picture category, and has fans of the social satire eager to find out its success at the American awards.
