King Kong will return to cinemas in 2016, appearing in new movie from Legendary Pictures titled Skull Island.
Announced at Comic-Con international in San Diego this weekend, the film will arrive in cinemas on November 16, 2016.
The original King Kong, which revolutionised cinema in 1933, has already been remade twice, most recently by Peter Jackson in 2005.
Legendary Pictures adds the property to a growing list of monster movie licenses, which also includes Godzilla and Pacific Rim.
The King Kong revival has sparked rumours that the great ape could eventually appear in a crossover film with Godzilla, a concept that was previously tackled by Toho Studios 1962.
A new Godzilla sequel featuring the classic monsters Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah was also announced at Comic-Con.
