Rumours have started to fly that Jennifer Grey, well known as “Baby” in Dirty Dancing, may be preparing to star in and executive produce a currently untitled dance movie.
Few details are known as of yet, but with the involvement of Lionsgate, many are speculating it could be a sequel to the 1987 classic.
The movie is expected to be set in the 90’s, which would match up with Dirty Dancing’s time line.
Originally set in 1963, the flick is now 33 years old, and would place Frances “Baby” Houseman as a 50 year old woman, living in 1996.
Jennifer Grey showed in 2010’s season of Dancing With the Stars, which saw her winning the top prize, that she certainly still has the dance skills necessary for reprising the role.
Written by the team of Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, known for 2019’s Five Feet Apart and The Curse of La Llorona, with Megamix’s Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer helping to shape the project, it seems to be in safe hands, whether its a sequel or just another dance movie.
It’s easy to see why Lionsgate would want to create a sequel, when you consider the huge success of the original.
Made on a budget of under $10 million, the movie earned a total of over $210 million world wide. It also won an Oscar, and became the first movie to sell over 1 million copies on home video.
Unlike many other movies of the time, its also managed to stand up to the test of time, still being referenced in other media, and considered a ‘must watch’ film.
Sadly, fans may see a recast or write out for Johnny Castle, the heartthrob originally played by Patrick Swayze, who passed away back in 2009.
Everything is currently speculation, but there are certainly plenty of factors that point to the possibility of a sequel.
