Marvel officially announced yesterday that the long awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 has begun principle photography in Pinewood Studios, Atlanta.
The film is set to be released on May 5th, 2017 and sees the return of the original cast plus a few extra names which have been announced by Director James Gunn.
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Glenn Close all return to their roles as well as new cast members Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Hollywood legend, Kurt Russell.
Pom Klementieff is the only addition whose character has been officially announced as James Gunn confirmed she’ll be playing Mantis. As for the rest of the new additions, that remains a mystery although there are strong rumours that Kurt Russell will be playing Peter Quill/Star Lord’s father, though that is yet to be confirmed.
It’s highly likely that Russell will be playing Peter’s father, though James Gunn has confirmed that he won’t be playing J’Son of Spartax, Peter’s father in the comics. It’s more likely that they will make Star Lord’s father someone more significant to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, either in the past or present of the universe.
The casting of Elizabeth Debicki has also been met with enthusiasm and has sent rumours flying regarding a possible role for Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. Though there’s not much strength to these rumours, it would make sense for Marvel to introduce her character into a previous film before her own individual one, much like they are doing with Black Panther and Spider-Man.
The Captain Marvel solo film has seen some setbacks that has seen it pushed back to a early 2019 release date and Marvel might want to get the character established and introduced before then and before her inevitable appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. This is all speculation for now but definitely something to look closely at.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follows the highly successful Vol.1, released in August 2014, which went on to be a major success for Marvel, despite the franchise and team being virtually unknown to the wider audience. The film went on to make over $700 Million at the worldwide box office and has since become one of the MCU’s most popular and beloved films.
More updates on Vol.2 will be available as we get them.
