Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy is on course to shift more pre-sale tickets than any other August release in history.

The news comes via box office company Fandango, who claim that James Gunn’s blockbuster is on the verge of claiming the record from The Bourne Identity.

Guardians stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper as a motley crew of intergalactic anti-heroes tasked with preventing a devastating weapon from falling into the wrong hands.

The property is the first contemporary Marvel movie that isn’t based on an established property, but has been well received by critics.

Marvel has already announced a sequel, with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 set to land in 2017.

Guardians of the Galaxy arrived in UK cinemas earlier this week.
