It has been a few years since detective Sherlock Holmes and John Watson graced our screens in the last series of Sherlock. Their absence is set to change in December with the upcoming release of comedy/mystery Holmes and Watson.
Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we have been given our first official glimpse of the new film, with Step Brothers stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reuniting in full Victorian-era costume standing outside their residence at Baker Street.
The film was initially announced in 2008, the year before Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law first appeared as the detectives, both of whom are set to reprise their roles in Sherlock Holmes 3 in December 2020. The original film was planned to star Will Ferrell starring as Watson and Sacha Baron Cohan as Holmes, but was stuck in development hell.
The new film is written and directed by Tropic Thunder’s Etan Cohan and based on the works of Arthur Conan Doyle. The plot so far, remains a mystery with details still scarce. This could change in the next few months with the release of a trailer.
Joining the comic duo will be a plethora of stars including Hugh Laurie as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes, Kelly Macdonald as Mrs. Hudson, Rob Brydon as Inspector Lestrade, Pam Ferris as Queen Victoria, and Harry Potter’s Ralph Fiennes as arch enemy Professor Moriarty.
It is likely that a trailer and possibly a poster will be around the corner with only four months until the film’s release, which was pushed back from August 2018 back to November, and then again to December, where it will be competing with the likes of James Wan’s Aquaman.
The chemistry between Ferrell and Reilly is always worth a watch and will definitely bring something new to the detectives that fans will enjoy.
Holmes and Watson will be released on 21st December 2018.
