Jason Statham was almost killed filming The Expendables 3 when a vehicular stunt went awry, according to his co-star Sylvester Stallone.

The Crank actor had his diving skills to thank for saving his life when a three-ton truck he was driving plunged into the sea, forcing him to leap to safety.

“He faced death. He was test-driving a three-ton truck and the brakes run out. It went down 60ft into the Black Sea and became impaled. Luckily we had taken the doors off before,” Stallone told The Daily Mirror.

“If anyone else had been in that truck we would have been dead because we were all wearing heavy boots and gun belts. We would have drowned. But because Jason is an Olympic-quality diver he got out of it.”

Statham is a former competitive diver, having represented England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games in the springboard and platform events.

Directed by Patrick Hughes, the Expendables 3 sees action movie veterans including Stallone, Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up for a third outing.

The Expendables 3 arrives in UK cinemas on 14th August.
