Joaquin Phoenix is allegedly close to signing on for the title role in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange.

The Gladiator star has been in negotiations for the part since July and the casting will be made official shortly, according to Collider.

Scott Derrickson will direct Doctor Strange based on the classic comic book series, which tells the story of surgeon Stephen Strange, who becomes the mystical protector of the Marvel Universe.

Reports suggest that Marvel Studios is moving away from origin stories and is planning to kick the film off with Stephen Strange established in the role of Sorcerer Supreme.

Jack Huston, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch have previously been linked with the role of Doctor Strange.

Marvel Studios is yet to announce a release date for the movie.
