Denzel Washington’s new action outing has dominated the American box office by taking $35 million over the weekend.
The film sees Denzel breathe new life into the character of Robert McCall who had previously been seen in the hit TV show of the same name in the 1980s which starred Edward Woodward, of The Wicker Man and Hot Fuzz fame.
McCall is a retired black ops agent who now lives a simple life working in a DIY shop before being dragged into a conflict with a Russian mobster.
Much attention has been drawn to the film’s graphic violence, but this has obviously not deterred moviegoers.
Sony Pictures have already announced plans for a sequel.
