Denzel Washington has been cast in the remake of The Magnificent Seven, it has been confirmed.

The acclaimed actor will re-team with The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua on the project, which will be a retelling of the classic 1960 western.

Directed by John Sturges, Magnificent Seven is itself a remake, based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai.

The movie stars Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz as a band of gunmen hired to protect a Mexican village from a ruthless gang of outlaws.

Washington has also worked with Fuqua on 2001’s Training Day, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Sony Pictures has plans to develop Magnificent Seven into a franchise if the remake is successful, according to Variety.
