Black Panther is making history as the first superhero movie ever to be nominated for Best Picture after wowing audiences with the story of mythical country Wakanda.
The film proved to be a massive success with both audiences and critics alike, as well as earning a gross of $1.3 billion worldwide box office haul.
But the betting industry has expressed a lack of faith on their appearance at the Oscars as they are giving them only a 3% implied probability to win the major category.
There’s no doubt the Marvel blockbuster faces some impressive competition. It’s up against Bohemian Rhapsody, BlacKkKlansman, A Star is Born, The Favourite and Vice.
All of which are unarguably worthy nominees, but Panther stands out with all the ingredients of an unforgettable picture and the makings of the perfect superhero movie.
It’s no surprise that it’s been nominated for a number of awards this year including, Best Costume Design, Best Original Musical Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Production Design.
From its talented cast to its epic soundtrack, including original songs from the likes of Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd, it set a new standard for the Marvel films that would follow.
Not to mention the social media hype surrounding its release from memes to endless tweets quoting “Wakanda forever”. The comic world and cinema goers got behind one of the first major movies to feature a majority black cast.
Black Panther may have made a statement in pop culture, but does it have what it takes to win Best Picture? We at Purple Revolver HQ are rooting for the Wakandan King.
