20 years after its initial release, Chicken Run remains the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time. On the Anniversary, Aardman animation have announced they are teaming up with Netflix to produce a sequel.

Chicken Run saw a group of chickens, led by Ginger, attempting to escape the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy. But when an American Rooster called Rocky falls into the farm, Ginger realises the only way out is by flying.

The story was wrapped up perfectly with the Chickens escaping and getting a happy ending. With this in mind, the animators began developing ideas for a sequel that was “worthy of Chicken Run”.

Peter Lord, the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Aardman announced that have found the perfect story to tell, with Netflix feeling like the ideal creative partner for the project.

“They celebrate the filmmaker,” Lord said. “Which means we can make the film we want to make – the one we really care about – and share it with a global audience.”

The sequel will be going into production in 2021 and will be directed by Flushed Away’s Sam Fell, with Steve Pegram (Arthur Christmas) and Leyla Hobart (Sherlock Gnomes) producing.

The script has been written by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’ Farrell and Rachael Tunnard, with Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park acting as consultant.

Alongside this, we also have the official synopsis for the highly-anticipated sequel:

“Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seemed complete.

But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in!

There’s no word yet on whether the original cast will be returning, but it certainly sounds like a great idea for a sequel that keeps the spirit of the first, and we can’t wait to see more from Ginger, Rocky and the rest of the coop.

Chicken Run 2 is coming soon!
