The role of billionaire Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film is one again up for grabs again after it was announced Charlie Hunnam had left the project.

Universal Pictures issued a joint statement with Focus Pictures to explain the 33 year old’s exit from the big-screen adaptation of EL James’ renowned novel.

The statement said: “The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”

The British-born Pacific Rim actor is currently reprising his role as Jax Teller in the hit FX television series Sons of Anarchy but was unable to commit to making that and Fifty Shades.

Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) is directing the erotic drama with newcomer Dakota Johnson playing the lucrative part of student Anastasia Steele.

The Fifty Shades of Grey film is set for release on August 1st 2014.
