Avengers Endgame is expected to overtake Avatar and set a new record for worldwide box office takings with “only” 50 million dollars to go.
The latest chart still has Avatar still in first place, with $2.787 billion receipts, but Avengers Endgame is in second place at $2.732 billion.
But even as it continues to rake in cash, some fans have been disappointed that Endgame lacks the special ENDING they had been expecting.
It was like a ritual, for the fans, to wait through all the credits for another scene, a repay to all the ones that sat down for 2 or more hours to watch the film, even though the beauty of the movie, repays the spectator completely.
Since 2008, when Marvel added a post-credit scene to “Iron Man”, the studio has made it the sign-off for every film in the series.
Devotees of the franchise have always remained glued to their seats through minutes of the end credits, waiting to be rewarded with a funny scene, or clues to the plot of next movie.
But this time their wait was unrewarded and it has caused some consternation.
In a Twitter storm one fan, YellowGlassDragon summed it up when she said: “There is no post credit scene. There is no mid credit scene. Don’t bother waiting around coz the theatre staff needs every second it can get to clean in between the bazillion shows a day.”
But the Russo Brothers, directors of many Marvel’s films, defended the decision not to add a post-credit scene.
“It was never on the cards. It was called ENDgame for a reason. This is it. This is the ending. The book is closed on that chapter of the Marvel universe and a new book will get written,” co-director Joe Russo told USA TODAY.
The only post-credit footage was the Marvel logo and the sound iron being beaten – an echo of Tony Stark forging his first Iron Man suit.
“Don’t read too much into it” added Joe. “It’s really just an homage, sort of a little bookend. It started it and it ends,”
His brother and co-director Anthony Russo added: “There will be a future, of course, but it’s not our responsibility.”
However, Marvel and Disney, have given audiences a consolation tail-piece.
A post credit scene was added a few days after Endgame was first released, but it’s not what fans diehard fans were expecting.
The post credit scene is a trailer for the next MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) film: “Spider-man: Far From Home”, that arrives in cinemas on the 2nd July, starring Tom Holland, with co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Samuel L. Jackson
