Liverpool’s LightNight festival was due to take place on Friday 15 May. Whilst the free, annual culture crawl around the city can’t be recreated in lockdown, Open Culture are instead looking to use the date as an opportunity to celebrate art, artists and creatives online.
The theme of this year’s LightNight was to be ‘Home’, reflecting on the nature of home as a physical dwelling, a place of community, family, connection and value. Home is a place both on a map and in our hearts and minds.
Through 100’s of free events, LightNight artists, writers, producers, performers and musicians were responding to the theme of Home with new work. But with LightNight, like so many arts and cultural events, unable to happen this Spring, instead, organisers Open Culture want to use the date to cast a spotlight on some of those creatives whose work makes the free festival what it is, but by sharing it online instead.
The hashtag #LightNightatHome will be a place to share and view work by Liverpool’s creatives that would have formed part of LightNight 2020, on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. It starts at 5pm on Friday 15th May.

‘We chose the theme of ‘Home’ for LightNight 2020 well over a year ago, because it encompasses a broad scope of ideas that we can all relate to. We never expected that our theme of ‘Home’ would become even more resonant during this unprecedented lockdown, and whilst LightNight cannot be replicated virtually we want to provide a platform for a night of sharing, creativity and inspiration.”
Everyone is invited to follow #LightNightatHome. You can take part in an activity on the night, including artwork conceived by local artist Laura-Kate Chapman, who was originally commissioned for a special installation at the Museum of Liverpool for the night. Instead, she is inviting people of all ages to participate in making a 3D house or poster, that creatively explores what home means to you, and to share those creations online.
