British video game legend Peter Molyneux has finally admitted that his trademark excitable rants could have doomed Fable III before it was even released.

Talking in a recent interview the developer admitted that whilst working at Lionhead and Microsoft, he made some ambitious promises that he felt tainted fans early impressions of the game.

“The trouble with me is I do this stupid thing, and I always do it, where I start talking in an excited way about what I’m working on before I’m finished”

Fable III remains infamous amongst fans for falling short of the grand promises that Molyneux made during the games development, but the designer always defended the title until he left Lionhead and Microsoft in 2012 to join rival game studio 22Cans.

But, the British designer didn’t shoulder all of the responsibility for the failures of Fable III, claiming the franchise was “always flawed in some way.”

He said: “I thought Fable 1 – when you consider that it was the first game I ever did of that type – wasn’t bad. It was hugely flawed in some senses, and there were technical issues like the animation didn’t work but it wasn’t bad.

“I think Fable II was a step in the right direction. I think Fable III was a train wreck. It was built to be much bigger than what it was constrained to be and eventually ended up as.”

Molyneux goes onto admit that given his time again he would do things differently, but he doubts he will ever make his perfect game.

“I just shouldn’t get so excited in front of the press. There’s an empirical decay between what the idea is in your mind and what you end up with, no matter what creative field you’re working in. I talk to a lot of creative people and they’re often disappointed in their own work.”

Peter’s old studio Lionhead are still working on bringing the Fable franchise to the next generation through Fable Legends.
