Based in Seoul, South Korea, ROCKY is an exciting Canadian singer, actress, poet and burlesque performer of Cameroonian descent, who mixes jazz and soul, with hip hop and reggae to create a sound that is uniquely her own. Drawing comparisons with greats such as Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, and Billie Holiday, as well as future legends like Janelle Monae and Macy Gray, Rocky has spent the past 18 months cementing herself in the Seoul live music scene, and is set to release her debut EP in early 2020, with the view of garnering a global audience.

Her exquisite new offering ‘HOW WILL I KNOW’ is the first taste of her anticipated debut project, with a second single coming shortly after in November. Produced by Defnelson and written by Rocky herself, the single tackles the common question “are they into me?” as it explores the good and the bad of relationships and situationships, the song lets you know when to cut the person you’re dating off. Rocky’s raspy jazz vocals are offset by dark hip hop instrumentals, creating the perfect mood for a song about love in the dating apocalypse.

Speaking about the inspiration for ‘How Will I Know’, Rocky says, “Love and connection are an integral part of the human experience, and we mainly learn about it through trial and error. So many of us give our precious energy to people who aren’t ready to reciprocate due to where they are on their journey. No hard feelings. Cut off dead branches. Connect with the god in you. Sing her praises. And embrace the good you’re now syncing with. That’s what this song is about. If a person is treating you like garbage, they aren’t showing you love. Let that ninja go!”

Alongside her exciting new music, Rocky recently published her first poetry book titled Blue Bird, which saw the Montreal native exploring themes around blackness, womanhood, freedom, self-love, and their intersectionalities, to rave reviews. However Rocky’s creative outlets don’t end there, she also appeared in Korean TV drama series WWW earlier this summer, and has performed in three burlesque plays, produced by Starlight Burlesque, including last year’s WWC Superstars and Open Letters, and last month’s acclaimed P.U.S.S.I Whipped.
