Creative Review New Music
Following on the monstrous success of last year’s late summer anthem ‘Cold Water’, international superstars MAJOR LAZER – the collaborative project of Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire – release their brand new single, ‘Run Up’, featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR & NICKI MINAJ. The track will be released via Because Music this January 27th.
Following their biggest year to date that saw previous singles ‘Cold Water’ and ‘Light It Up’ go platinum as well as ‘Lean On’ top over 1.5 mil sales (becoming the second most streamed song of all time), Major Lazer are set to kick in 2017 in true dancehall style with the release of ‘Run Up’.
Bringing together the unmistakable talents of global-megastar Nicki Minaj and OVO’s PARTYNEXTDOOR, who is fresh off the back of writing one of 2016’s biggest selling singles, Rihanna’s ‘Work’), ‘Run Up’ is an addictive, mellow slice of dancehall-inspired pop poised to be this season’s hottest tracks. “It’s always important for us to work with people who are on the same wave,” says Diplo. “Nicki and Party really helped us bring the classic Major Lazer style to create this perfect party record.”
Founded in 2007 by Mad Decent founder and Grammy Award winner Diplo, the dancehall-inspired project consisting of Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire have taken the world by storm and established themselves as one of the most popular acts on the planet. Since being sampled on Beyonce’s 2011 anthem ‘Run the World (Girls)’, Major Lazer have completely reinvented and reinvigorated modern pop music with their trademark genre-defying style.
From bringing the likes of international superstars such as Bruno Mars, Ellie Goulding and Ariana Grande together with dancehall legends like Vybz Kartel, Elliphant, Chronixxx and Busy Signal to continuing to collaborate with the next generation of superstars such as MØ, Kali Uchis, Ty Dolla $ign and Travi$ Scott, Major Lazer have consistently established themselves as the most important global tastemakers of our generation.
In 2015, the band released their third LP, ‘Peace Is the Mission’, which reached #1 on the Electronic/Dance Album Chart as well as debuted their new TV show (starring Star War’s John Boyega and featuring guest stars such as Aziz Ansari, Trinidad James, Charli XCX and Ezra Koenig). Following an incredible sold-out UK headline tour and a landmark historical show to over 400,000 people as the first major US artist to play in Cuba since the restoration of US-Cuban ties, the band broke 2016 in with a string of highly-anticipated headline dates at both Lovebox and Bestival dates.
