If you are going to record a live album in the same venue AC/DC laid down their iconic If You Want Blood, You’ve Got It, then it had better be better than good. So when blues giants King King decided to record their debut live CD in their hometown of Glasgow at the o2 ABC, everything seemed in place for the capturing of a show as slick as the late, great Yul Bryner’s scalp.
All that was left to chance was ensnaring the atmosphere of the night; a mood generated by superb musicianship, stunning vocals and an exuberance amongst a band that few can beat. Does it work? Yes … and then some.
“Oh man, you came,” lead singer and guitarist extraordinaire Alan Nimmo extols gleefully as he tunes up before launching into Lose Control. A song so tailor made for the live arena it should be stamped Higgins & Brown.
The next hour or so of the CD is filled with joy, particularly noticeable during Nimmo’s call and response to the crowd during Rush Hour, although tracks such as More Than I Can Take with its pulsating rhythmic heart and the laid back cover of Frankie Miller’s Jealousy demonstrate the balance the band strike throughout.
And the crowd are metaphorically on fire, particularly during the enigmatic penultimate track, Stranger To Love, with its scintillating solo which is treated with such reverence it as though the o2 ABC has suddenly become consecrated.
With Lindsay Coulson (bass), Wayne Proctor (drums) and Bob Fridzema (keyboards) underscoring what Nimmo creates, today King King are the UK’s hottest Rock Blues band on the circuit. If you missed them at their plethora of gigs during the winter, spring and summer have no fear. They’re back on the road – this time with their potential equals Broken Witt Rebels in support – from November, this time taking in a gig at The Chester Live rooms on Saturday November 26th.
The CD is superb, but nothing beats catching this band live, up close and in person.
