Katy B is pleased to announce details of her new release Honey, alongside unveiling its title track, produced by KAYTRANADA and new single ‘Who Am I’ featuring Craig David and Major Lazer.
‘Who Am I’ marks Katy’s first single since her chart topping #1 ‘Turn The Music Louder (Rumble)’ with KDA and Tinie Tempah. The collaborative project sees Katy teaming up with some of the hottest artists and producers around, running the gamut from the underground to the top of the charts, and will be released on April 29th via Rinse/Virgin EMI.
First previewed with ‘Calm Down’ that was released in December and saw Katy join forces with Four Tetand Floating Points to praise from all corners of clubland to the mainstream, Honey features collaborations with Major Lazer, Craig David, J Hus, Wilkinson, Jamie Jones, Sasha Keable, Chris Lorenzo, Novelist, MssingNo and many others. Also included is a brand new and unheard version of Katy’s recent #1 single ‘Turn The Music Louder (Rumble)’ with KDA.
Honey is a love letter to Katy’s natural home – the global club underground. “I always love performing at places like Warehouse Project or Fabric,” Katy says, “and I wanted to have new songs that I could perform at that sort of gig. Just a few things to remind people what I was about.”
In a sense that’s Katy all over: whether in her songwriting or her career, the desire to dance and to get other people dancing has always been impulsive, but it’s consistently led on to creativity that has a whole lot more substance and lasting resonance. There is no contradiction between her being a proper pop star – with a Mercury nomination for debut album On a Mission and an Ivor Novello nomination for her songwriting – and being a musician completely immersed in the underground. In fact that’s why she is our best chronicler of 21st century dance culture too, indeed one of our very best pop songwriters full stop: she not only captures those precious ephemeral moments of being young and full of life and swept up in the moment – no mean feat in itself – but she draws from them something more universal, capturing feeling and meaning that makes sense to listeners even if they’ve never once set foot inside a rave.
“This project means a lot to me because I got to work with so many artists that I respect so highly”, Katy summarizes. “Writing it was so natural and I hope people enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it.”
