Twenty five years is a long time between albums. Since 1991 when Dan Reed Network released their third and until now most recent album, The Heat – from which came the hit single Lover – the clamour for new material from the band has been loud and long. So, with the release of Fight Another Day, has the expectation – and the wait – been worthwhile? The answer is an overall “Yes”, though with one or two reservations.
There is absolutely no doubting the quality of the musicianship, with Brion James’ cool guitar playing and synth arrangements providing a deliciously profound platform to Dan Pred and Melvin Brannon’s sumptuous rhythms. Rob Daiker’s keyboard skills are amongst the best around and on Ignition truly light up what is one of the strongest tracks on the album.
And then there are Dan Reed’s silky smooth vocals, which simply ooze contentment with that which he is producing. Eye of the Storm ripples with everything Reed has encountered on his intervening Network years – including a residency at a Tibetan Monastery and 4 years in Northern India – and the whole album’s subtle encapsulation of mysticism really comes to the fore here.
Yes there are one or two more than slightly schmaltzy moments. Save the World has nice sentiments, but comes over as being a little too twee and Champion is a song that could fit nicely on just about any pop album, anywhere. This said though, these grumbles are minor ones and overall Fight Another Day hails a more than welcome return for Dan Reed Network and the host of dates that are set to roll along soon.
