On the weekend when BGT has come back to the British TV channels, the producers, panellists and audiences who think that the current group of Fame groupies are as good as it gets really ought to check out Broken Witt Rebels and their EP, Georgia Pine, at the earliest opportunity.

The sound might be more Arizona than Aston – the band hail from Birmingham – and rest assured that this is an EP with more range and out-and-out energy than the host of stars required to fill the Midlands sky, with a mellowness that could put old JD himself to shame.

Danny Core’s gritty vocals may remind some of Caleb Followill, but Broken Witt Rebels are certainly no Kings of Leon copycat wannabes. Each of the tracks on Georgia Pine resonates and sparkles with originality and – particularly on the new single, Low – there is more than just a hint of how massive Broken Witt Rebels are destined to become. The tightness of the recording is as that of a band with ten years tough touring behind them, thanks to the mastery of Tom Gittins’ who has also recently worked with another Midlander of some note, Robert Plant.

Gettaway Man is quite simply the musical equivalent of warmed honey being allowed to rise gently to a powerful, riff laden boil, whereas the album closer – Guns – is a deliciously evocative homage to their home city that smacks of experience, wit (no pun intended) and portentous lyricism in the phrase “Sparks burn bright where the guns were made, burn bright like a cigarette”. If Georgia Pine is anything to go by, then the future most definitely burns bright for Broken Witt Rebels and guaranteed be more lasting than any fly by night ember.
