Single Review: The Chemists – This City

There’s no question that Bristol quintet The Chemists sound like an amalagamation of every single sub-type of rock that’s emerged in the last decade. Though it’s not neccessarily a bad thing.

Their new single, ‘This City’ has that late-night sleaze vibe going on, one that you’d probably assosciate with such acts as The Killers, Oasis and more notably; The Music — I mean, you could actually sit and list bands off your fingers that The Chemists are akin to…but somewhere within the three minutes and thirteen seconds of ‘This City’, there are definite sparks of ambition, flair, and vitality. They just need igniting.

Vocalist Johnny Benn offers one of those glitzy, rock ‘n’ roll voices — you know the kind of vocal that a frontman soaked in confidence develops after years of touring, recording, and alcohol abuse…shit like that. Yet this is just their second single, and they probably have the rock ‘n’ roll experience of five goldfish.

The Chemists might not be idiosyncratic, and arguably lack the verve of their competition; yet they’re promising…not promising much, but promising nonetheless.

‘This City’ is released March 29th through Distiller Records.
