The hype machine and blogosphere is falling head over heels for LA girl group and all round hot tamales Warpaint – so we went to give them the critical onceover.

The Kazimier is like being in a Eastern European carnival theatre, it was only missing a lion tamer and some acrobats. It boasts great acoustics and produced a good, warm atmosphere amongst the crowd who were all bopping around in their best frocks in anticipation for the gig.

Warpaint entered soon and were greeted by the obligatory cheers and the odd wolf whistle, which they all seemed to laugh off demurely.

There was no barrier with the stage and the great of ebb and flow of the crowd was controlled by the few stolid fans at the very front of the great homogenous mass.

It was time to hear if the hype surrounding this band was justified as they picked up their instruments and struck into their eponymous first song, Warpaint.

The guitars riffs were angular and jarring for this opener, the drums were frenzied and the melodies resolved without any singing from the girls at all. It was an authoritative way to start.

A couple of songs down the line the girls played into Undertow and it had the crowd in some sort of hypnotic trance with it’s washed out, sensual voicings. Some were in full rhythm sway while others were still with fixed looks on their faces in 100% awe of the sound rising to meet them.

Elephant was the last song and was the one everyone had turned out to see, with it’s super cool bass line and distorted drawn out vocals it was a real treat, a fine assault on all the senses.

Liverpool Music week had well and truly kicked off with a bang and people exited stage right thoroughly satisfied with the nights exploits.

Purple Revolver caught up with the girls backstage while they were signing EP’s for and the girls confirmed they absolutely love Liverpool saying The Kaz was one of the most unique spaces they had ever played in. They get top marks from us.
