Clean Bandit take on a fresh approach for pop music by incorporating their training in classical music.

Their first single ‘Rather Be’ was a huge hit and is definitely a song to help you get into the mood for summer. It samples classical instruments which is a refreshing twist for the pop music industry.

‘The classical thing is funny because we don’t really use any classical samples anymore. We only did on two of there songs on our albums, which were both written quite a long time ago – but it’s still the thing that people laugh at us about. So we guess it’s a useful selling point.’

This is not a new concept entirely, they are not the first band to introduce classical music into the 21st century but they are doing it in a slightly different way by having the classical instruments become a lead sound.

Most bands will use classical instruments as a background texture mixed with synths and bass lines, but this band is bringing violins and cellos to the front of their sound, giving it a whole new and exciting twist.

Grace Chatto and Neil Amin-Smith are the classically trained members of the group and this is the reason why keyboard player Jack Patterson felt so strongly about starting a band together.

“It was their interpretations of Shostakovich, Janacek, Beethoven – these are the kind of people they were playing,”

The choice to include this sound has been a good one with one of the fastest selling singles of the year being Rather Be and theirsecond single Extraordinary featuring Sharna Bass also including Grace’s cello playing, which has 2 million views on YouTube.

Their new single Extraordinary is out now and you can look forward to their album, New Eyes, being released on the 2nd of June.
