On September 14, hip-hop infused big band The Urban Renewal Project and renowned Bronx rap duo Camp Lo will kick off a fall tour in support of The Urban Renewal Project’s forthcoming album 21st Century Ghost, in which Camp Lo is featured.
Not only are Camp Lo and The Urban Renewal Project celebrating the release of 21st Century Ghost, but they are also celebrating the 20th anniversary of Camp Lo’s debut album Uptown Saturday Night, which was recently spotlighted in retrospectives by SPIN, Mass Appeal, and The Boombox, who called it an “unsung 90s classic.
Recorded at the same time Jay-Z recorded his debut album Reasonable Doubt, parts of both Reasonable Doubt and Uptown Saturday Night were produced by Ski (David Willis), and recorded in his Harlem apartment.
Camp Lo and Jay-Z crossed paths during the recording of their respective debut albums, and the artists drew inspirations from each other. Jay-Z’s “Feeling It” was even supposed to be a Camp Lo song but with Camp Lo’s permission, the producer gave the track to Jay.
The tour launches in The Urban Renewal Project’s hometown of Los Angeles with a release night celebration show of 21st Century Ghost at Los Globos. A genre-bending meditation on isolation in the era of hyperconnectivity, 21st Century Ghost features nine guest vocalists that run the gamut from L.A. MC Hugh Augustine to indie pop princess Gavin Turek. Due out September 15, 2017, preorder 21st Century Ghost via the Fastrac/Resonance website.
Camp Lo features on the first single from 21st Century Ghost, “Don’t Ask Y”. Premiered on HipHopDX, this funky, uplifting track “fuses ’90s sounding Hip Hop with deep funk beats and powerful brass.
“It was an amazing opportunity for us to work with Hip Hop legends Camp Lo, and their classic flow came together perfectly with our live band sound on this track,” bandleader R.W. Enoch, Jr. tells DX. “‘Don’t Ask Y’ is a wake-up call for everyone to be a trailblazer, not a trend chaser.”
