Ahead of their upcoming, highly anticipated shows at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium, rock icons, Foo Fighters, have joined Absolute Radio’s Dave Berry for a chat on his Breakfast show. The wide-ranging conversation covered everything from the World Cup, Glastonbury, Paul McCartney to Foo Fighters’ Pat Smear and his broken leg. The full interview is available now on YouTube.
Dave Grohl on Foo Fighter’s guitarist Pat Smear’s broken leg: ‘Pat’s doing well. I think he’s looking forward to coming back on the road with us. We talked about it [using the throne] I don’t think he wanted to use the throne. He was sending me pictures of like tiki bars where he could sort of like prop up on a stool and drink fruity cocktails. But I think by the time we start hitting the road, he’ll be up to speed. He’ll be good.’
Dave Grohl on his favourite toy: ‘Star Wars came out when I was seven years old and I was obsessed. I wanted a Darth Vader mask so badly but we didn’t have any money, there was one for sale for $40 in 1977 but I could never get it.
Then in 1994, it was Halloween, and I thought at this point, I had money and I thought, I’m going to get a Darth Vader mask and be Darth Vader for Halloween. So I got the mask, went to a Halloween party and quickly realized I can’t drink beer through this mask. So I would take the whole thing off, chug a beer, put the whole thing back on, 10 minutes later, take the whole thing off. But there was like this elastic band that held the face part on. And the next morning, I woke up and my nose was bruised because the more I drank, I would put the face thing back on and it would like slap me in the face. And so that’s why Darth Vader breathed that way.’
Dave Grohl on life as a Foo Fighter: ‘We only make records when we feel like it’s time to make a record – they’re kind of on a consistent cycle though. It’s once every three years, pretty much for 30 years. And so when we’re so inspired, we just start writing stuff and we get in the studio, start playing around. And then once it sounds like it’s an album, then it happens pretty quickly. But I mean, we still really like doing what we do. It’s just fun to circle the planet, playing rock and roll.’
Dave Grohl on whether Paul McCartney will be joining them at Anfield: ‘When I first found out we were doing that gig [Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium], I let him know. And he was like, ‘oh, you’re going to have a blast. It’ll be amazing.’ Yeah, Liverpool’s awesome. That place is great.’
