London’s The Union Chapel will host legendary musical pioneers Sun-Ra Arkestra on the 14th April 2016.
Acclaimed composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, poet and self-proclaimed ‘Extraterrestrial from Saturn’ Sun Ra conducted the band for many years until his death in 1993. Now conducted by 91 year old alto saxophonist Marshall Allen the Arkestra have toured the world keeping the spirit of Sun Ra’s music and persona alive.
Famed for playing in full intergalactic costume and performing compositions from Sun Ra’s vast back catalogue of over 125 studio records, the Arkestra are ‘something unique, brilliant and legendary’ (The Guardian).
Sun Ra’s music took many forms over his long and prolific career covering genres as diverse as big band, jazz, jazz-fusion and practically inventing Afro-futurism. His influence can be still seen and heard today across many genres of music, being a pioneer of polyrhythms, instrumentation and on stage theatrics.
Most Recently BBC 6 Music DJ, Worldwide Awards founder and huge Sun Ra fan Gilles Peterson dug his way through Sun Ra’s extensive back catalogue to compile a selection of tracks for ‘To Those Of Earth…And Other Worlds’ which was released on the 30th October on Strut Records to rave reviews.
