After a fantastic 2015 that saw him support James Bay on his HUGE UK tour, multi-talented artist, Samm Henshaw, starts 2016 by supporting acclaimed American singer-songwriter Tori Kelly on four special UK shows.
A strong contender on most ‘ones to watch’ lists thanks to a string of fantastically received soul-pop tracks including ‘Autonomy (Slave)’, ‘Only Wanna Be With You’, ‘Redemption’ and ‘Better’, Henshaw, released his highly anticipate The Sound Experiment EP at the end of 2015, garnering mainstream radio support from Radio 1’s Dev, Phil & Alice, Huw Stephens & Annie Mac.
Opening track ‘Temptations’ is an infectious, dreamy beginning to ‘The Sound Experiment’ journey – featuring some spoken word/rap from Samm. ‘Autonomy (Slave)’ introduces the raw emotion and power of Henshaw’s vocal ability, a call-to-arms that screams promise for live shows and festival stages with its gospel swells and uplifting melodies, whilst ‘Only Wanna Be With You’ and ‘Redemption’ are more stripped back, soulful affairs. ‘Better’ is a slow building ballad that channels Henshaw’s warm tones with his distinctive husk, complimented by falsetto backing vocals making it another standout track on the EP. Ending with the funky ’Everything’, the project concludes with the same powerful gusto as it started, a cohesion of sound and concept in a debut release set to be genre defining in its own right.
With ‘The Sound Experiment’, Samm Henshaw has shown an innate understanding for his craft of songwriting that belies his 21 years. Citing Hozier, D’Angelo and Paolo Nutini as his musical influences, along with many gospel greats, Henshaw’s roots play a huge part in his music. When combined with his love for experimentation, he has the ability to create tracks of masterful imagery and production. In his own words “Art is about freedom and doing your own thing” and in Henshaws case, his art will without doubt captivate audiences with its resonance.
