This weekend Purple Revolver will be heading down to Sefton Park to the Liverpool International Music Festival, where this year is set to be better than ever before.
The three day festival weekend is jam-packed with artists and DJs from across the city and across the globe.
Headlining the festival is Gorgon City, Naughty Boy and Corinne Bailey Rae, who will also be performing alongside the likes of JP Cooper, BBC Radio 1 Xtra DJ and presenter Trevor Nelson, Jax Jones and X-Factor’s Fleur East.
Purple Revolver spoke to LIMF’s Music Creator, Yaw Owusu, about this year’s festival and his choice in artists to make the Liverpool International Music Festival the best gig to go to in the North West.
PR: How is LIMF even bigger and better than previous years?
YAW: I think it’s better – maybe not bigger (Year one in 2013 went on for 5 weeks ha) even though we’ve added an amazing DJ Stage full of some of the most amazing DJs in the UK including MJ Cole, Logan Sama, Tieks, Seani B, James Hype and many more. Add that to a line up that includes Gorgon City, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jax Jones, Fuse ODG, JP Cooper, Trevor Nelson, Slick Rick (SLICK RICK!!!!), So Solid, Cast, Louis Berry, Kate Nash and so many more. In my opinion, easily the best year – but I may be biased. Oh yeah…most of it’s FREE!
PR: Why have you chosen the artists you have done to perform over the weekend?
YAW: Truly because I think the audiences will be interested and excited to see them perform, or for relatively unknown artists and bands, because people will go away happy they discovered them. I’m blessed that I can book with only those things in mind.
PR: Who are the breakthrough artists performing at LIMF this year that will be headlining festivals in years to come?
YAW: I think we should all be keeping an eye on Jax Jones, JP Cooper, Louis Berry, Jessie Reyez, She Drew The Gun, XamVolo, James Hype, Youngr, SUEDEBROWN…that’s just off the top of my head.. too many too list
PR: Why do you believe it is important to go to LIMF–apart from the fact that some events are free!
YAW: Good people with a love and passionate for music, together, loving good music and good vibes in a great setting.
But to give even more detail, I do think there’s a lot of stuff happening here that isn’t happening at festivals of LIMF style or scale anywhere in the world. UK Garage with a 45 piece orchestra – first time ever happening at LIMF 2017. Slick Rick, Kool DJ Red Alert, Jungle Brothers, Stretch Armstrong and more celebrating 90s Hip-Hop. Legends! Trevor Nelson playing nothing but 90’s R&B. Pioneer. Yousef and crew throwing back to House Music from the early 2000s…then you have the FREE and diverse stuff happening in the park for free – Gorgon City, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jax Jones, Fleur East, JP Cooper, The Farm, The Christians…
If you don’t find something you like, you don’t like music and good vibes ha!
PR: What are your hopes for the future of LIMF?
YAW: I hope that it not just survives these tough times and a competitive market but becomes a leader in its field. 2018 will be a very important year and I hope the city and the audiences from further a field, supports the next cycle for LIMF.
PR: Will LIMF be bigger again next year? Will you expand?
YAW: Enhancement is key to surviving I believe. I think if we can get better, more efficient and better at engaging passionate people, musicians and creatives, it will mean that we will continue to get better.
I’ve got a million ideas so as long as the will is there for LIMF and for me to curate and artistically direct, then let’s see where it can go hey!
