It seems like Chic and Nile Rodgers are everywhere at the moment, whether it’s playing Glastonbury, speaking out on BBC4 about how to make it in the music business, or touring the world with Earth, Wind and Fire; you name it, they’ve been there.
So what could be more fitting then than having the King and Queens of funk and disco headlining the 15th Anniversary Year Opening Night of the prestigious Liverpool Music Week at the Echo Arena later this month?
Around since the 1970s, in a time when your dad would be bopping away in the front room, wishing he was gracing the dance-floor at Studio 54 in a pair of bright white flares, and wondering why nobody thought he was the ‘greatest dancer’, Chic feat. Nile Rodgers have transcended many a musical genre, have influenced many of today’s artists and sport a back-catalogue that most modern-day acts would be stupid not to envy.
In an age when music, artists and bands are so disposable; coming and going like proverbial yo-yos, dropping like flies after a spate of crappy album sales; it’s the oldies who seem to be keeping the dream alive – The Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Morrissey, Neil Diamond – they’re all still at it, their influences and iconic statuses thriving when others have fallen at the first hurdle.
Chic are renowned for classics such as Dance, Dance, Dance; I’m Comin’ Out; I Want Your Love; We Are Family; and Good Times; and the legendary disco stars, fronted by guitar-wielding, funk hero, Nile Rodgers, haven’t appeared in Liverpool in four decades, so to have them open this milestone year for Liverpool Music Week is iconic in itself.
Liverpool Music Week kicks off with Chic at the Echo arena on Thursday 26th October and the festivities continue with many other acts playing at various venues across the city until Saturday 4th November when Manchester’s Mercury Prize nominated indie-electro-pop mainstays, Everything Everything, headline the closing the party at the Liverpool’s Guild of Students.
Everything Everything who have recently released fourth album, A Fever Dream, will be joined by AJ Tracey, Zola Jesus, Perfume Genius, and The Orielles, in what promises to be an exciting end to fabulous week of music.
Tickets for individual gigs can be purchased through the Liverpool Music Week website. Wristbands are also available through the website at a cost of around £65 and will gain punters entrance to all LMW17 shows.
