The rumour mill and gossip halls of the internet have been abuzz with talk that Twin Peaks could be set to return in some fashion after nearly a quarter century off the airwaves.
The word is that David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Dune) is getting set to film something new which may possibly tie in with or indeed continue the story of Twin Peaks.
Twin Peaks, the twisted brainchild of David Lynch and Mark Frost, first hit the airwaves on the April, 8th 1990.
The fallout is still being felt now and the show’s impact cannot be understated.
At its best, the show was dark, funny, mysterious, gripping, and at times borderline incomprehensible.
In short, Twin Peaks changed the way people thought about television. It concerned the on-going investigation into the mysterious murder of teen prom queen, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), against the backdrop of a small town where everybody has their own dark secret.
The show was filled with a host of truly original and memorable characters but, while tremendously popular, its run was short lived and the show was (some say unjustly) cancelled little more than a year later on the 10th June, 1991.
This meant that the show ended on a huge cliff-hanger, perhaps one of the most discussed in television history (“How’s Annie? How’s Annie?”) and fans have been clamouring for more surreal Lynchian goodness ever since.
Lynch did revisit the world of Twin Peaks with the feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me in 1992, but it was a prequel rather than a direct continuation and many felt it didn’t quite reflect all that they had loved about the show, with many beloved characters being noticeably absent from the final cut.
But now it seems that finally, the time may be at hand for the town and citizens of Twin Peaks to return. Or, then again, maybe not. After all, there have been rumours circulating about the imminent return of the show for years.
Just last year, in fact, the internet was ablaze with them, and Netflix has apparently expressed an interest in playing host to a reboot.
But sadly, thus far, these rumours have amounted to nothing except to prove without a shadow of a doubt that there are a great number of people out there that still care about the series, even 25 later.
For those who know – that’s another thing. It’s nearly been 25 years since Twin Peaks graced our screens, and as fans of the show will know, that’s exactly how far into the future the cryptic conversation in The Black Lodge between Laura Palmer and Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) takes place. Perhaps this could hint at a forthcoming return.
Of course, Twin Peaks also featured a dancing dwarf that talked in backwards riddles, a precognitive giant, a one armed man possessed by a demon called MIKE who was in turn hunting another demon called BOB, and some really weird stuff about creamed corn. So, you know, it’s entirely possible that fans of the show could be reading too much into the whole thing.
But even so, the evidence that Twin Peaks could be returning seems more plausible on this occasion, as a casting call put out by David Lynch himself has seemingly been uncovered. The casting call reads as follows:
“TWIN PEAKS PROMO. Directed by David Lynch. Shoots in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Prob a 6 hour or less day. Rate is 150/8. You must live in LA to submit. I don’t think SAG has jurisdiction on this, so SAG and NON can submit. I have called SAG to double check this and I am awaiting a call back to confirm.
“HOT Caucasian girl – BRUNETTE OR REDHEADS ONLY to play waitress. Age 18-27. MUST have an amazing body. Busty, very period looking face. Please submit two current color photos (one body shot, one face shot), your sizes, union status and contact info to: SandeAlessiCasting@gmail.com.”
Can this be taken as definitive proof that Twin Peaks is finally coming back to show all these derivative young punk TV shows a thing or two about how to really grip an audience? In truth, we suspect not.
It seems much more likely that this has something to do with the upcoming release of a Blu Ray set of the series, perhaps relating to a special feature of some kind. Either way, it appears as though we will be getting at least some new Twin Peaks footage in the near future.
One thing remains certain to all those who have been drawn into the wonderful and frightening world of Twin Peaks: the owls are not what they seem. And maybe nothing else is either.
