Grab some bacon pancakes, you’ll need cheering up after this news.

The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Adventure Time is set to end after its ninth season. The news was broken earlier this week by Cartoon Network, with Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher commenting on the impact that the award-winning show has had.

Adventure Time altered what a kids’ TV series could be, it had a lasting impact on popular culture around the world. Cartoon Network Studios is thrilled to have brought together the group of fantastic artists and animators that contributed to making Adventure Time one of the most revered TV series in recent years.

Some form of rejoice however, Pendleton Ward’s series won’t simply slink off into the good night – THS reports that the series will conclude in 2018, and that the remaining two seasons will air in the form of 142 half-hours of content. Cartoon Network has reported that there’ll be new episodes, but also miniseries, specials and “more”.

Ward, who recently compiled a self-homage for The Simpsons, shared a bittersweet statement of his own: “Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories. We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think.”

Production on the ninth season of Adventure Time is underway.
