With the recent casting of She-Hulk and the first trailer for WandaVision, we have slowly seen Marvel’s Phase Four taking shape. Now, after a long and hard search, Deadline have confirmed the casting of newcomer Iman Vellani as the lead in Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel is another addition to Marvel’s expanding list of new TV shows exclusive to Disney+.
Details about the show remain scarce, however, it has recently been revealed that Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Odaib-Chinoy and Meera Menon will each direct episodes of the upcoming series.
The casting marks Iman Vellani’s first major Hollywood production, who doesn’t even have an IMDB profile page. She was, however, part of the “Next Wave Committee” at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019.
According to Deadline “The plane was always to stay true to the character in finding the right actress to play the role, even if it meant offering a person that was not well known to the public.”
Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan is a relatively new character to the Marvel Universe, having debuted in 2013, marking Marvel’s first Muslim character to headline their own comic book. She’s a teenager who discovers she possesses Inhuman genes that allow her to shapeshift in a similar fashion to Fantastic Four’s Mister Fantastic.
She most recently appeared as a central character in Marvel’s Avengers videogame, voiced by the amazing Sandra Saad.
It is unclear what path the story will take and how much comic influence the series will possess, or whether or not Captain Marvel will make a cameo, but it’s great to see the series starting to take shape, and that Marvel are ramping up production once again.
Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel will stream on Disney+ in 2022.
