Speculation is growing as to Who is going to follow in Matt Smith’s footsteps and enter the TARDIS after he revealed he will hang up his bow tie later this year.

The search has begun to find Matt’s replacement, which could be announced as early as next month as keeping it under wraps will prove almost impossible.

The 12th Doctor will be unveiled in time for filming for the Christmas special next month and eighth series in August.

This will be the Time Lord’s penultimate regeneration as his species have only 12 reincarnations during their life cycle, making 13 different Time Lords.

Matt Smith’s final appearance will air Christmas Day, which is expected to show the Time Lord’s regeneration and the new Doctor’s arrival.

Steven Moffat will make the decision with the help of Danny Cohen, the BBC’s new head of television, controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson, casting director Andy Pryor and the show’s new executive producer Brian Minchin.

Cutting It actor Ben Daniels has emerged as an early favourite, with odds of 3-1, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Russell Tovey and Damien Moloney all at 10-1.

Producers have not yet ruled out the possibility of a female 12th Doctor, with Sue Perkins, Miranda Hart and Olivia Coleman all suggested for the role.

Former companion Billie Piper is also at 16-1 to get the job.

Doctor Who returns on November 23 for the 50th anniversary special, starring David Tennant and John Hurt.
