Prior to COVID-19 turning the world on its head to suspend and cancel the majority of sports and entertainment ventures, Adult Swim’s popular cartoon series Rick And Morty had already established a reputation for having quite the sporadic production schedule. Sometimes years would go by without a single mention of anything, then out of the blue, an episode would drop on an occasion such as April Fool’s Day in a surprise. Co-creator Dan Harmon has announced recently that season 5 of Rick And Morty is set to arrive as scheduled – perhaps even sooner than anticipated.

“We’re more on schedule than we’ve ever been,” says Harmon, noting how little COVID-19 has impacted the digital workflow.

“It kind of makes you have to focus on the whole process when you don’t have this office environment anymore… Everyone has to run this bee colony remotely, so the honey just gets made more consistently. It’s working for us.”

During the Comic-Con at Home virtual panels this past summer, an early preview of Rick And Morty season 5 was screened to audiences. It was at these panels where Harmon revealed that they were “basically done writing”.

It’s yet to be revealed the exact release date for season 5 of Rick And Morty, simply that it is “coming soon” – Dan Harmon did however, hint at the following:

“There’s an episode in Season 5 where Morty has a relationship with another female character that’s not Jessica. It’s just a great little story and my very, very longtime friend and collaborator Rob Schrab wrote it… He’s also a very tender writer – a juvenile John Hughes. He really feels heartache on a level a man his age shouldn’t… my Emmy is going to that one.”

Adult Swim commissioned 70 new episodes back in 2018. After the latest season concludes, a further 60 will remain in the series plans, which means that there will still be sci-fi hi-jinks to enjoy in the years to come.
