War Child announce their inaugural rockumentary film festival
Last shop standing / Shut up and play the hits / Upside down: The creation record story
Joining forces with champions of independent cinema Everyman, this autumn War Child, the charity for children affected by conflict presents the Rockumentary Film Festival; a celebration of some of the finest musical documentaries in recent years accompanied by unique Q&As with directors, producers and musical talent alike – all to raise money.
The unique series is the latest musical fundraising venture for the charity with its heritage of innovative music partnerships. War Child released the Help! Album, a compilation which perfectly captured the Britpop zeitgeist, 20 years ago making £1.25 million to support children caught in the conflict in Bosnia.
Today funds raised support children affected by wars in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa.
Inspired by the book of the same name, acclaimed documentary Last Shop Standing celebrates the ongoing spirit of the people keeping independent record shops alive in the ever changing climate of music consumption.
The screening will be accompanied by a Q&A with Rough Trade’s Nigel House, radio DJ and Inspiral Carpets man Clint Boon and veteran of the independent music world Debbie Smith, chaired by BBC 6 Music’s Matt Everitt.
Before this year’s triumphant rebirth, Shut Up And Play The Hits provided a fitting curtain call for electronic heroes LCD Soundsystem. Chronicling their then-final show at a sold-out Madison Square Garden as well as the immediate aftermath, the film provides a unique insight into the self-imposed retirement of one of the biggest bands in the world.
Al Doyle of the band and Hot Chip fame will be on hand to discuss the huge evening and their live return with BBC 6 Music’s Matt Everitt.
Telling the story of one of the most influential labels in UK history, Upside Down: The Creation Records Story provides a close look at the rise and fall of Alan McGee’s empire.
Releasing records from The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and introducing the world to a little group called Oasis, the label’s story is a true rollercoaster ride and director Danny O’Connor and the label founder himself will be in attendance for a very special Q&A.
