An unreleased Bill Murray movie dating back to 1984 recently resurfaced on YouTube before license holders Warner Bros pulled the plug on it.

Nothing Lasts Forever is an oddball sci-fi comedy directed by Saturday Night Live writer Tom Schiller and produced by MGM Studios.

The film stars Gremlins actor Zach Galligan as an aspiring artist who travels to an alternate version of New York City, where the Port Authority have take over and turned the city into a totalitarian state.

After a stint as a night watchman with Dan Aykroyd as his boss, Galligan’s character finds himself on board a bus to the moon, piloted by Murray.

It’s a zany premise and Schiller’s stylistic choices match this, with scenes suddenly transitioning from black and white to colour and the cast breaking into off-kilter musical numbers on occasion.

MGM has never confirmed why the film was shelved, but there are a number of possible reasons, from potential copyright issues to studio concerns that it was not commercial enough.

Nothing Lasts Forever remains Schiller’s only feature film to date, although he did go on to direct countless commercials.

Warners’ decision to block the YouTube video could indicate that the studio has plans for a home media or digital release in the future.
