We might be slaves to handheld devices in this modern day and age, but when you needed to grasp more power in the hey day of Hollywood – minds wandered to big dream machines and their unlimited potential.
Join us as we take a wander through cinematic history to discover the top 5 heavy duty machines which sparked the imagination for merry mischief and adventure.
5 – The Time Sled – The Time Machine
In at number 5 is this archaic beauty. H.G. Wells described the Time Sled in his 1895 novel as “a thing of brass, ebony, ivory, and translucent glimmering quartz,” but it wasn’t until the 1960 film version that we really got to see it. What a sweet machine! Surely enough to turn Santa’s face and wardrobe bright green with envy.
4 -The hot tub – Hot Tub Time Machine
Machines in movies are usually going to help propel the protagonist into some kind of sci-fi shenanigans and more than often time travel will form the basis of the plot. But who could have guessed that a hot tub would prove to have the answer to Albert Einstein’s most fevered dreams – in this zany comedy.
Maybe a shifty looking Chevy Chase gave us the clue that not everything is what it seems as the four holiday pals are sent back to the 80s in a dip they weren’t expecting. Try and tell us that since watching the movie – you haven’t wished the same would happen to you when you stepped into a jacuzzi.
3 – The Batpod – The Dark Knight
We admit it – this one divides opinion. This machine blew most members of the audience away. Some might say it’s just the Batmobile transformed to crime fighting crusades on two wheels.
But in fact it’s much more than that – it’s a feat of engineering nobody thought Batman could pull off. And you think Christopher Nolan might have The Dark Knight fall from his new ride. But Inception and Dunkirk director Christopher Nolan does not play by the rules. And Bats looks so sweet riding his new whip!
2 – The Pork Chop Express – Big Trouble In Little China
When you think of heavy duty machine movers you don’t get any better than Jack Burton and his iconic truck The Pork Chop Express from John Carpenter’s classic flick Big Trouble In Little China. The fearsome truck takes Jack into the midst of San Francisco’s Chinatown and delivers him to the heart of the action and ancient troublemaker Lo Pan.
And when it comes down to it, you can’t put it any better than Jack: “Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake.
“Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and he says, “Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it.”
1 – A DeLorean DMC-12 – Back to the Future
In at the top spot is Doc Brown’s all time travelling favourite, which made everyone want doors on their car, which open upwards like wings. It’s got to be complete with a flux capacitor – how else are you going to crash your mum and dad’s high school prom?
The DeLorean was a commercial flop when it was first released by motor giant GMC, but became a cult classic after the adventures of Marty McFly hit our cinema screens. After all, “if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?
