Terminator creator James Cameron has explained why Arnold Schwarzenegger’s age will not be an issue in upcoming sequel Terminator: Genisys.

The acclaimed filmmaker said that he shared advice with Genisys producer David Ellison about how to tackle the potential plot hole of the actor’s change of appearance.

“I pointed out that the outer covering [of the Terminator] was actually not synthetic, that it was organic and therefore could age. You could theoretically have a Terminator that was sent back in time, missed his target, and ended up just kind of living on in society,” Cameron told Deadline.

“Because he is a learning computer and has a brain as a central processor he could actually become more human as he went along without getting discovered.”

So, there you have it. The Terminator’s outer layer is living tissue that can age just like our own flash, a handy plot device if you’re planning to cast the same actor as the cyborg he played 30 years ago.

Schwarzenegger will appear along side Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Dayo Okeniyi, Courtney B Vance, Matt Smith, Byung-hun Lee and JK Simmons in Genisys, which will reboot the Terminator series while maintaining some ties to the original.

Directed by Alan Taylor, Terminator: Genisys will be released in UK cinemas on 26th June next year.
